A basic summary of most mental health conditions likely to affect children & young people.
POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)
A mental health problem you may develop after experiencing traumatic events.
PREMENSTRUAL DYSPHORIC DISORDER (PMDD)
A very severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It causes a range of emotional and physical symptoms every month during the week or two before your period. It is sometimes referred to as 'severe PMS'.
RECREATIONAL DRUGS, ALCOHOL AND ADDICTION
Recreational drugs and alcohol can affect your mental health in lots of different ways. And it can be hard to know where to find support if you are struggling with addiction.
SCHIZOPHRENIA
A complicated mental health problem related to psychosis.
POSTNATAL DEPRESSION AND PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH
A 'perinatal' mental health problem is one that you experience any time from becoming pregnant up to a year after you give birth.
PSYCHOSIS
Psychosis (also called a 'psychotic experience' or 'psychotic episode') is when you perceive or interpret reality in a very different way from people around you. You might be said to 'lose touch' with reality.
SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDER
A condition where symptoms of both psychotic and mood disorders are present together during one episode (or within a two week period of each other).
SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)
A type of depression that you experience during particular seasons or times of year.
